Razorback Brew 8/1: To the Max

Today, KJ Jefferson and Rocket Sanders are among the country's elite players.

Good morning. The month of August brings the return of Razorback athletics. Yes, we’re so back.

It’s also watch list season for football, and a big out of conference matchup has been scheduled for men’s basketball.

Now, what else did we mix into today’s Brew?

🏈 HOGS+ FOOTBALL PREVIEW

Ground and pound. When you think of Arkansas football, you think of a solid run game. The 2023 Razorbacks are no different, as they roster a nightmarish trio of running backs for opposing defenses to deal with. One of them even reminds offensive coordinator Dan Enos of Alex Collins.

Clay Henry continues his preview of the 2023 Arkansas football team with a breakdown of the running backs, featuring exclusive insight from Coach Enos.

🔺 To The Max. Two of Arkansas’ finest have been named to the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award. Quarterback KJ Jefferson and running back Rocket Sanders are two of 85 players on the preseason watch list for the award presented to the best player in college football.

Arkansas is one of 16 schools and one of only three SEC programs with two players represented.

KJ and Rocket weren’t the only Razorbacks to be named to an award watch list on Monday. Long snapper Eli Stein also tabbed to the Patrick Mannelly Long Snapper Award preseason watch list. Eli played in 12 games last year as a freshman for Arkansas, getting off 113 snaps for punts and field goals.

🔺 Dime After Dime. We’re now just 32 days from the start of Arkansas’ football season, and we’re remembering the historic 2010 season for the late Ryan Mallett. In his second and final year quarterbacking the Hogs, Mallett threw a school record 32 touchdown passes throughout Arkansas’ 10-win campaign. Read Clay Henry’s piece on what made Mallett so special as a person.

🔺 Rapid Rise. Just five years ago, Jimmy Smith was in his fifth season as a high school head coach in Atlanta. Now, he’s in his fourth season coaching running backs at Arkansas, and serves as Sam Pittman’s associate head coach. Whether it’s coaching up Rocket Sanders or heading out on the recruiting trail, his background as a high school coach serves him well. But beyond that, it taught him how to handle adversity—something we all can learn from. Hear his story in the latest episode of the Hog Pod with Bo Mattingly.

🔺 Seeing Red. Arkansas and Oklahoma have a longstanding history on the hardwood, and the Crimson & Cardinal Classic is just another chapter. The Razorbacks have played the Sooners in each of the last two seasons, and the matchup is currently tied at 1-1.

The rubber match will officially take place on Saturday, December 9 and will be played in Tulsa, OK at the BOK Center for the third-straight year. Razorback Foundation members and men’s basketball season ticket holders can request their tickets for the game beginning today through the Razorback Ticket Center. Tickets will be made available to the general public on Friday, August 4.

Relive last year’s win over Oklahoma in this all-access episode of The Follow, only on HogsPlus.com.
