Razorback Brew 7/6: Continuing to climb

Today, Britton Wilson has the attention of the Olympics.

Good morning. New beginnings are happening for Arkansas track and field, and one of the brightest Razorbacks has the attention of the world’s biggest stage. We’ve got that and more in store for your Thursday morning.

Now, what else did we mix into today’s Brew?

🏃‍♀️ OFF AND RUNNING

A new era begins. It's the beginning of July, which means Chris Johnson has officially stepped into the role of Women's Track and Field head coach.

Go inside a practice as Coach Johnson prepares a multi-national sprint crew for upcoming championships in their respective nations. These championships serve as trials to make national teams for the World Championships in Budapest later this year. Hear from Coach Johnson on how his first week has been, as well as Paris Peoples and Rosey Effiong on what makes him special.

📈 STOCK UP

🔺 Continuing To Climb. Having had a standout season for Arkansas, Britton Wilson now turns her attention to the U.S. Track and Field Championships and - she hopes - World Athletics' showpiece event in August. Her double-dip into the 400m and 400m hurdles is nearly unheard of, and she thanks the tough times she went through to get to where she is now. Check out this interview with the Razorback track star on Olympics.com!

🔺 Three In The Bag. Arkansas men’s golf has added three transfers for the 2023-24 season in Jacob Skov Olesen, Mateo Pulcini and Matthis Lefevre. All three golfers have had impressive collegiate careers before arriving in Fayetteville but these factoids stand out to us:

  • Jacob was top-ranked junior college player according to GolfStat with a scoring average of 69.53 before arriving to TCU.

  • Mateo was a three-time NCAA Division II All-American for Oklahoma Christian University.

  • Matthis won the 2023 JuCo Jack Nicklaus Player of the Year Award during his third year at New Mexico Junior College.

🔺 Senior Push. We’re now just 58 days from the start of Arkansas’ football season. Arkansas’ defensive line will feature No. 58 Jashaud Stewart, a senior from Jonesboro, AR. In his junior season for the Hogs, Jashaud played in 10 games with six starts, including the final five games of the year. He posted career-high 14 tackles, including a pair of sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss. Jashaud’s end-of-year starting streak bodes well for him making that final leap as a senior.

🔺 Home Run Hire. Arkansas softball has hired DJ Gasso as program’s newest assistant coach. Gasso, who just completed his third season as the hitting coach for the University of Utah, will now join the Razorbacks under the same role. While Gasso was with Utah, the Utes won a Pac-12 Tournament Championship and clinched their first Women’s College World Series appearance in nearly 20 years. Gasso was also promoted to associate head coach in December 2022. Learn more about Razorback softball’s newest assistant here.
