Razorback Brew 7/31: Getting clinical

Today, the world of tennis gets a taste of Arkansas.

Good morning. That July heat is about to turn into an August blaze, which means those pads are soon to come on for Arkansas. Clay Henry’s 2023 Football Preview for Hogs+ continues this week, starting with a look at the most important position on the field.

New system, Same old KJ. With his senior season a month from beginning, Arkansas quarterback KJ Jefferson is in lockstep with offensive coordinator Dan Enos. But what Enos finds most impressive about his quarterback is the leadership he exhibits, and respect that follows.

Clay Henry continues his preview of the 2023 Arkansas football team with a breakdown of KJ and the quarterbacks, featuring exclusive insight from Enos.

🎙️ HOG POD: JIMMY SMITH

Jimmy Smith has had a rapid ascent through the football coaching ranks. Just five years ago, he was in his fifth season as a high school head coach in Atlanta. Now, he’s in his fourth season coaching running backs at Arkansas, and serves as Sam Pittman’s associate head coach. Whether it’s coaching up Rocket Sanders or heading out on the recruiting trail, his background as a high school coach serves him well. But beyond that, it taught him how to handle adversity—something we all can learn from.

Hear his story in the latest episode of the Hog Pod with Bo Mattingly.

📈 STOCK UP

🔺 More The Merrier. Five additions to the Razorbacks program through transfers include sprinters, hurdlers, and middle-distance athletes joining Arkansas for the 2023-24 season. The group of new additions includes hurdler Terry Caldwell of Pittsburg State, hurdler Elijah Morris from Baylor, sprint-hurdler William Spencer Jr. of South Carolina, middle-distance runner Riley Wells from Illinois State, and sprinter Tevijon Williams of Incarnate Word. Learn more about the newest Razorbacks here.

🔺 Ariel Authority. We’re now just 33 days from the start of Arkansas’ football season. One of the greatest wins in Razorback history also featured a school record when quarterback Brandon Allen completed 33 passes in the Hogs’ 53-52 victory over Ole Miss in 2015. Allen also threw for six touchdowns in that game, another record that was soon broken by the Fayetteville native just two weeks later against Mississippi State.

🔺 Family Ink. No matter how far he runs on the football field, Rocket Sanders carries his mom’s name for every yard. His first tattoo was inspired by his brother, and plenty more followed after that. Check out Episode 4 of Behind The Ink featuring the Razorbacks star running back.

🔺 Getting Clinical. Arkansas soccer’s first exhibition of the new season is just a week away, and their home opener against Arkansas State is coming up soon after that. The night before the season opener, the Razorbacks and Red Wolves will hold a free community clinic at Razorback Field on Wednesday, August 16. Open to children aged 6-12, the clinic will feature technical soccer training with student-athletes from both teams. 🔺 Sichuan Service. Arkansas women’s tennis junior Lenka Stara of Slovakia won her opening match of the Women's Singles Draw over Lize-Alet Morkel (RSA) 6-2, 6-3 at the FISU World University Games in Chengdu, China. Lenka’s 2nd Round matchup against No. 4 seed Misaki Matuda of Japan takes place this afternoon.
