🐗 BEST OF RAZORBACK ATHLETICS

There were many exciting moments during the Hogs football season last year, and director of athletics Hunter Yurachek was there for them all.

In part one of a four-part interview with Arkansas’ AD, Hunter Yurachek gives his opinion on how the football team performed and also tells a story about how he injured himself after the Liberty Bowl win. In addition, Yurachek explains why the soccer team is superstitious about him showing up to the SEC Tournament. Then we take a look at the volleyball team and a moving speech from their head coach, Jason Watson.

🎙️ HOG POD: JARED WEGNER

Jared Wegner’s journey hasn’t been a straight line. And he’s perfectly OK with that, knowing how things have turned out.

From the Little League World Series, to shining for the Hogs, and now as a drafted player of the New York Yankees, Wegner knows what it takes to succeed at the highest levels. And owes it, in part, to his time at Arkansas.

Listen to Wegner’s pre-draft conversation with Bo Mattingly in the latest episode of the Hog Pod.

📈 STOCK UP

🔺 The Show Calls. The MLB Draft has seen several Diamond Hogs become early round selections, including a day one pick from Sunday evening.

  • Jaxson Wiggins: 68th overall to the Chicago Cubs. As a sophomore in 2022, Wiggins went 6-3 with a 6.55 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 66 innings across 17 appearances with 15 starts. The Hogs’ lone selection on day one of the draft became the 253rd overall draft selection in program history.

  • Hunter Hollan: 74th overall to the Cincinnati Reds. In his first and only year with the Hogs, Hollan made 17 appearances with 15 starts on the mound. He posted an 8-2 record with a 4.13 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 80.2 innings of work. He’s is the 18th Arkansas pitcher drafted since 2019 as well as the 14th taken in the first 10 rounds.

  • Tavian Josenberger: 100th overall to the Baltimore Orioles. Josenberger was the Razorbacks’ leadoff hitter and everyday center fielder. He played in 52 games with 51 starts and slashed .286/.414/.490 with 10 home runs and 33 RBI. He also led the team in stolen bases with 13.

  • Jace Bohrofen: 184th overall to the Toronto Blue Jays. One of the Hogs’ three team captains, Bohrofen started all 60 games he played in, slashing a team-leading .318/.436/.612 with 16 home runs and 52 RBI. He finished the season as the team leader in hits (68), doubles (15), home runs (16), extra-base hits (31) and total bases (131).

  • Jared Wegner: 282nd overall to the New York Yankees. Despite missing nearly 20 games dues to injury, Wegner led the Hogs in slugging percentage (.673) and finished second on the team in both home runs (15) and runs batted in (52).

Through 10 rounds, five Razorbacks have been selected in the 2023 MLB Draft, tying for third most among all SEC programs.

🔺 One, Two, Three, LEAP. The USATF and Jamaica championships are all wrapped up, and Razorbacks Jaydon Hibbert and Nickisha Pryce each claimed titles on the final day of competition in Kingston. Jaydon continued his renowned dominance in the triple jump with a winning leap of 17.68 meters, while Nickisha set a career best time of 50.21 in the 400m title. Back in the States, Arkansas volunteer assistant Shamier Little cruised to victory in the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.34 in her first USATF title since 2018, and incoming Razorback freshman Shawnti Jackson won the 200m title at the USATF U20 championships. Jackson’s winning time of 22.48 broke the previous meet record by 0.01 seconds.

🔺 Path Finder. We’re now just 53 days from the start of Arkansas’ football season. One of the Razorbacks’ key reserves wears the No. 53 jersey in offensive lineman Ty’Kieast Crawford. Since transferring from Charlotte following the 2020 season, Ty’Kieast has appeared in 11 games on offense, and 23 games in total when including special teams. He graded out at a solid 68.4 for run blocking in 2022, per Pro Football Focus.

🔺 Step Up To The Mic. Talking season arrives next week with SEC Media Days taking place in Nashville, Tennessee for the first time. Head Coach Sam Pittman will be joined by three players to speak to the media on the morning of Wednesday, July 19.

  • DE Landon Jackson. Entering his second season with the Razorbacks after transferring from LSU, Landon made seven starts and played in all 13 games in 2022. He produced 23 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and three sacks, which are the third-most among returning players.

  • QB KJ Jefferson. You know him, you love him. KJ is set to rewrite several sections of the Arkansas record book this fall as he enters his third straight season as the full-time starter. Going into the season, he’s seventh in career completions and passing yards, and sixth in touchdown passes.

  • RB Raheim Sanders. The man known as “Rocket” is coming off a spectacular sophomore season in which he ran for 1,443 yards. That yardage was not just the second-most in the league, but the fourth-most by a Razorback in a single season.
