Razorback Brew 7/10: Winners welcome

Today, more Razorbacks claim impressive wins on the track.

Good morning. This is the Razorback Brew, but if coffee isn’t getting the job done, how about a Piña Colada on National Piña Colada day? (After work hours, of course.) But if you’re not into yoga, and you have half a brain, well, we can’t help you there.

What we can do is get your week started right with some exciting updates on Razorbacks in the big leagues, summer leagues, and every league in between.

Now, what else did we mix into today’s Brew?

🎧 THE RAZORBACK DAILY

State of the Razorbacks. Arkansas director of athletics, Hunter Yurachek, is sitting down with Hogs+ this week for an exclusive four-part interview to discuss the past year of Arkansas sports, and what’s in store for the next 12 months. Part one drops tomorrow on HogsPlus.com.

Today, Q and Z catch up with Yurachek, to talk about all the successes from the last year and look toward the future.

🏀 BUZZER BEATER

Call bank? Nah, Makayla Daniels called GAME. Arkansas women’s basketball made headlines this past season with their electric win over Vanderbilt. Go behind the scenes with head coach Mike Neighbors as he prepares his team for the exciting matchup, and get exclusive access on game day in the locker room, on the sidelines, and in the huddles. Plus, go right inside of the action-packed ending as Daniels hits a game-winning 3-point shot to give the hogs the victory.

📈 STOCK UP

🔺 Winners Welcome. It was an exciting weekend for the past and present of Arkansas track and field. Program alums Krissy Gear and Nikki Hiltz came out as winners at the USATF Championships, as Gear claimed victory in the 3,000m steeplechase, and Hiltz took home gold in the 1,500m. Runner-up finishes included Britton Wilson in the 400m, Jarrion Lawson in the long jump, and Taliyah Brooks in the heptathlon. Down at the Jamaican Championships, Wayne Pinnock finished on top in long jump, with Carey McLeod placing third. Rojé Stona also turned in a second place showing in the discuss.

🔺 First Punch-out. Former Arkansas pitcher Isaiah Campbell did us all proud Friday evening as he recorded his first career strikeout in his MLB debut for the Seattle Mariners. Campbell dominated on the rubber for the Diamond Hogs from 2016-18 before becoming a second round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft. The 2023 MLB Draft began last night (may lead with this if Jace gets selected tonight…)

🔺 They Got Next. This weekend saw Arkansas men’s basketball draft picks Jordan Walsh and Anthony Black show out in their Summer League debuts. Walsh led the Boston Celtics with 18 points on 6-11 shooting (4-6 from behind the arc) to go with five rebounds and two steals. Black posted 17 points while going 7 of 10 from the field while also staying busy clearing the glass with five rebounds, and facilitating the rock with five assists.

🔺 Go Beaux Go. We’re now just 54 days from the start of Arkansas’ football season, but we’re taking a moment to spotlight No. 55 for the Hogs, Beaux Limmer. The senior was named a 2023 Preseason Third-Team All-American by both Athlon and Phil Steele following a stellar 2022 season starting at right guard for the Razorbacks. He even took over at center for Arkansas’ Liberty Bowl victory, allowing zero pressures for 32 pass blocking snaps.

🔺 Web Gem. It’s the offseason for Arkansas baseball, but the king of clutch, Kendall Diggs, is keeping busy playing some Summer ball for the Bourne Braves. Kendall made SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays Sunday with this impressive sliding grab.
