Razorback Brew 6/28: The Hall awaits

Today, we learn the newest Arkansas Hall of Honor inductees.

Good morning. We are shocked and saddened by the passing of Ryan Mallett. He was a Razorback football legend with larger-than-life talent and a personality to match. He led the Arkansas program to some of its best moments in recent memory. He will be missed by everyone who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his mother Debbie and his extended family.

🔺 The Hall Awaits. Eight former University of Arkansas student-athletes and a legendary coach have been selected as members of the 2023 class of the University of Arkansas Sports Hall of Honor. The nine-inductee class includes honorees from five different decades who competed and coached for the Razorbacks in eight different sports. These are the nine honorees:

  • Marc Brumble (baseball)

  • Taylor Ellis-Watson (women’s track and field)

  • Lenzie Howell (men’s basketball)

  • Kimberly Wilson Jenkins (women’s basketball)

  • Oskar Johansson (men’s tennis)

  • Felix Jones (football)

  • Honey Marsh (soccer)

  • Coach Houston Nutt (football)

  • David Swain (men’s track and field)

The illustrious group will be formally inducted in a ceremony to be held on Friday, September 8, 2023, at the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville. The ceremony will be held the night prior to the Arkansas-Kent State football game, set for 3 p.m. at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

🔺 Elusive Option. This week, we’re counting down KJ Jefferson’s top 5 plays from the 2022 season. Coming in at the No. 3 slot is one of KJ’s shiftiness plays ever made in an Arkansas jersey. With the Hogs needing a touchdown late and finding themselves in the red zone, QB1 called his own number not once but twice... ending up in the end zone and closing the gap to less than a field goal in the fourth quarter. Check out the play and the full top 5 list, courtesy of Clay Henry, on HogsPlus.com.

🔺 Celebratory Six. We’re now 66 days from the start of Arkansas’ football season. The 1966 NFL Draft class featured six Razorbacks being selected, headlined by running back James Lindsey, the 27th overall pick of the Minnesota Vikings. The class of ’66 had the most Hogs picked in the entire decade, and the first time it reached that high since 1954. The record for most Razorbacks drafted in a single class is eight, set in 1945.

🔺 Tall Tales Of Truth. A three-star recruit out of high school, Dan Skipper wasted no time to make an impact for Arkansas football. He started 47 straight games for the Razorbacks, the second-longest streak in program history. But a standout college career doesn’t equate to immediate success at the next level. At one point, Skipper was making pies, thinking his career was over. 2022 became a different chapter as he finally got his shot with the Detroit Lions, earning his first career start in Week 2. Hear Skipper’s larger than life story with Bo Mattingly in this episode of the Hog Pod.

🔺 Verge Of History. For the second year in a row, both Arkansas men’s and women’s track and field teams have a finalist for The Bowerman. Britton Wilson was revealed to be one of the three women finalists yesterday, and Jaydon Hibbert has made the final three for the men’s award. Jaydon becomes the third-ever Razorback to make the final three, and the fourth-ever freshman to do so in the award’s 14-year existence. Previous Arkansas finalists for the men’s Bowerman included Jarrion Lawson, who won in 2016, along with Ayden Owens-Delerme in 2022. Be sure to give Jaydon your vote here as he hopes to be the first freshman to win the award!
