Razorback Brew 6/26: One shot, one opportunity

Today, we recap the latest triumphs for Arkansas track.

Good morning. Razorbacks of old and the present did us proud over the weekend at John McDonnell Field. We’ll catch you up to speed, as well as recognize more All-America honors for some Diamond Hogs.

Five For No. 1: Arkansas quarterback KJ Jefferson had himself a year, adding to the highlight reel week in and week out. What better way to celebrate than by going through our top five best plays from this past season? The one and only Clay Henry broke down his picks for HogsPlus.com.

Now, what else did we mix into today’s Brew?

🎙️ HOG POD: DAN SKIPPER

Dan Skipper's journey has been larger than life. From grinding out SEC wins with the Hogs, to earning a moment of pride with the Detroit Lions six years in to his NFL career, the 6’9” offensive lineman has quite the story to tell.

Hear Skippers’s memories from taking the boot back from LSU, what he believes to be Sam Pittman’s best quality as a coach, and so much more in this episode of the Hog Pod with Bo Mattingly.

📈 STOCK UP

🔺 Foundation Pieces. Arkansas pitchers Hagen Smith and Brady Tygart have been named All-Americans by the College Baseball Foundation, both earning second-team recognition from the outlet. Hagen has now collected All-America praise from five major selectors, while this is Brady’s first All-American honor since season’s end. Brady has now become the 33rd All-American in program history.

🔺 Grand Ole Time. Three Razorback alums claimed victories in Trackwired Arkansas Grand Prix held Friday at John McDonnell Field

  • Taliyah Brooks won the 100m hurdles in 12.84 (1.4 wind) after producing a windy 12.72 (2.4 wind) in the prelims.

  • Shafiqua Maloney earned an 800m victory by producing a season best of 2:01.99. Her 400m split came in at under a minute (58.67).

  • Carina Viljoen clocked a winning time of 4:13.70 in the 1,500m over a field mixed with Arkansas alums and current Razorbacks.

🔺 One Shot, One Opportunity. The new Arkansas record holder in the shot put is Jordan West, as the redshirt senior achieved a distance of 68-1.5 (20.76) to eventually place second in the event at the Grand Prix. Razorback track athlete Chris Bailey also made some history as he is now No. 3 on the Arkansas all-time list in the 400m. Chris won the event at the Grand Prix with a career-best time of 44.84.

🔺 Pour Some Sugar On Me. We’re now 68 days from the start of Arkansas’ football season. The 1968 team was one of the best in school history, finishing 10-1 on the season as the No. 6 team in the country. The year culminated in what remains as Arkansas only Sugar Bowl victory. The Hogs nearly shutout No. 4 Georgia in a 16-2 victory.

🔺 Perfectly Placed. This week, we’re counting down KJ Jefferson’s top 5 plays from the 2022 season. In the No. 5 slot is this dart to wide receiver Matt Landers vs. Kansas in the Liberty Bowl. The 59-yard first quarter touchdown would be the first of seven trips to the end zone for Arkansas in a buck wild 55-53 victory. Check out the full top 5 list, courtesy of Clay Henry, on HogsPlus.com.
