🔺 With the sixth pick in the 2023 NBA Draft… The Orlando Magic select Anthony Black, point guard, Arkansas. That’s how the Draft started for Razorback basketball. Anthony became the seventh top-10 pick in program history, and highest-drafted Hog since Joe Kleine was selected sixth overall back in 1985.
Nick Smith Jr. was the next to hear his name go off the board to the Charlotte Hornets at 27th overall, and the Hogs’ freshman backcourt duo of Anthony and Nick officially became the first pair of Razorbacks to be first-round picks in the same draft since 1992. 11 picks later, Jordan Walsh was selected the Boston Celtics, who acquired the 38th pick from the Sacramento Kings. Jordan became the third Razorback to be drafted to Boston, and the most recent since Joe Johnson was drafted 22 years ago.
This is the 10th draft that featured multiple Arkansas players (the first since 1992) and just the fourth time as many as three went off the board. Following the draft, Ricky Council IV signed a two-way deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, completing an Eastern Conference sweep for Arkansas’ newest #ProHogs.
🔺 Pacific Rim. Arkansas softball’s Hannah Gammill will join the U.S. Women’s National Team 16-player roster for the 2023 Japan All-Star Series. Team USA will play world-ranked No. 2 Japan in a three-game series held across three cities in Japan–Fukushima, Iwakuni and Yokohama–from August 4-7. Hannah will be one of five SEC players to make up the squad. Only the PAC-12 has as many players represented.
🔺 Complete Game. We’re now 71 days from the start of Arkansas’ football season. In 1971, Razorback quarterback Joe Ferguson led the SWC in nearly every passing category, but one specific game stood the test of time. His 31 completions in the Hogs’ game against Texas A&M remained a school record for 41 years.
🔺 Wired Up. John McDonnell Field will host the Trackwired Arkansas Grand Prix today, as a mix of current Razorbacks and Arkansas alums are entered in several events. Entries include present Fayetteville stars such as Rosey Effiong in the women’s 200m, Rojé Stona and Jordan West in the shot put, and Connor Washington in the men’s 100m. Check out all the entries here.
🔺 Jump For Joy. Arkansas is the only school to have multiple track and field athletes among the 10 semifinalists for the men’s 2023 Bowerman award. Razorback jumpers Jaydon Hibbert and Carey McLeod are now in contention for the award, which will cut down to three finalists early next week. This marks the fourth and fifth time for Arkansas to have a semifinalist for the men’s Bowerman. Ayden Owens-Delerme, who made it down to the final three last year, was the most recent to make the cut.
