Razorback Brew 5/12: The very best

Today, a top-10 series begins in Baum-Walker.

Good morning. The Hogs got off to a good start at the SEC Outdoor Championships, and the final home series for Arkansas baseball begins tonight. Let’s enter the weekend on the right foot.

Now, what’s all been mixed into today’s Brew?

🎥 ESPN analysts praise Hog softball
⚾️ Big matchup in Baum-Walker
🐗 And so much more!

🎥 HEAR FROM THE EXPERTS

Quite the turnaround. The Arkansas softball program has come a long way under the leadership of head coach Courtney Deifel. ESPN & SEC Network analysts Kayla Braud and Tori Vidales sit down to discuss how far the program has come.

📈 STOCK UP

🔺 Crème de la Crème. Two baseball clubs with identical 36-12 records are set to begin a three-game series in Baum-Walker Stadium this evening as No. 3 Arkansas hosts No. 6 South Carolina. It’s the first top-10 series played in Fayetteville in almost exactly two years when then-No. 1 Arkansas hosted then-No. 9 Florida.

Southpaw Hagen Smith gets the ball to start tonight for his second consecutive series opener. Hagen is 7-1 on the year with a team-leading 2.656 ERA and two saves over 42 2/3 innings of work on the mound. The true sophomore has struck out a team-high 79 batters and limited opposing hitters to a meager .181 batting average.

First pitch in today’s series opener is scheduled for 6:30pm on SEC Network Plus. And if you’re heading to tomorrow’s tilt, be sure to catch soon-to-be graduates John Bolton, Brady Slavens, and Jared Wegner honored as senior players prior to the game.

🔺 Leading Off Well. Arkansas softball’s Reagan Johnson is one of two SEC players to be a top 10 Finalist for the 2023 TUCCI/NFCA National Freshman of the Year award. She’s the first Razorback freshman to be selected to the list since Mary Haff was in 2018. Entering the SEC Tournament, Reagan ranked second in the conference in hits with 72 and sported a team-leading .377 batting average as the leadoff hitter.

🔺 KJ Speaks. Arkansas QB KJ Jefferson joins Braden Gall and Erin Dugan to talk SEC football, Arkansas, life, NIL and more in the latest episode of Fringe Element. Hear KJ touch on several topics such as playing under new offensive coordinator Dan Enos, being a veteran of the toughest conference in college football, and what Mother’s Day means to him.

🔺 Usual Suspects. The stars for Arkansas track and field shined bright on day one of the SEC Outdoor Championships. Britton Wilson cleared everyone in the women’s 400m hurdles preliminaries with a facility record time of 53.76 seconds, while Ayden Owens-Delerme finished second in the men’s 400m hurdles prelims with a time of 49.12.

But it was sophomore Sydney Thorvaldson and junior Julia Paternain who owned the night for the Razorbacks. Sydney and Julia finished 1-2 in the women’s 10k, the lone track final on Thursday. They are the first teammates to finish first and second in the event since 2009.
