Razorback Brew 4/6: Taking the crown

Today, Arkansas faces the defending champs.

Good morning. The weekend is right around the corner, but action on the diamond starts today. Arkansas baseball and softball are beginning new series tonight, and a young Razorback is taking on the top golfers in the world. Let’s get into it.

Now, what's all been mixed in today's Brew?

Trickle down urgency. Preparedness starts from the top-down. Offensive Coordinator Dan Enos has a vision to set the standard in practice, so his staff can help set up KJ Jefferson and the Razorbacks for success. It’s but one of several points of emphasis for the new-look offense in Fayetteville.

Tera Talmadge hosts an in-depth look at the new culture being built at Arkansas on the offensive side of the ball under Coach Enos. Guests include Sam Pittman, KJ, Jimmy Smith, Brady Latham and several other players. Hogs+ analyst Quinn Grovey also joins the show to give his thoughts on spring practices.

🔺 High Ranks, High Stakes. Arkansas softball is back in Bogle Park today a week removed from sweeping the Bulldogs of Mississippi State. It’s the Bulldogs of Georgia this time around in a battle between top-10 teams. Tonight’s series opener is set for 6pm on SEC Network Plus.

Go back and look at the last 12 SEC series the Razorbacks have played. You’ll find that the Hogs won 11 of them. Courtney Deifel’s squad is 7-2 in their last nine games, and rank second in batting average (.315), runs scored (60), hits (79), RBI (54) among conference teams.

A familiar face is set to return to Bogle today as well. Former Razorback Danielle Gibson will sport the visitors colors as UGA’s Volunteer Assistant. In honor of her return, there will be a Danielle Gibson replica “shirsey” giveaway to for the first 750 fans who show up to Thursday night’s affair.

🔺 Augusta In The A.M. It’s for Arkansas to take over the Masters. Current Razorback men’s golfer Mateo Fernandez de Oliviera is teeing off with 2013 winner Bubba Watson at 8:48am CT. 90 minutes later, former Razorback Taylor Moore will join 2011 winner Charl Schwartzel on the first tee at 10:18am CT. Enter Mateo’s mindset for the biggest week of his career in his appearance on the latest episode of the Hog Pod.

🔺 Respect The Finish. After making its third-straight Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament, Arkansas men’s basketball has earned quite the respect. Initial rankings have the Hogs’ incoming recruiting class ranked as high as seventh in the country, and next year’s team is ranked as high as ninth. The Hogs finished the season ranked 21st after beating No. 1 seeded Kansas in the Round of 32.

🔺 H’s Get Ks. As we hit the halfway of the baseball season, we’ve got a couple of Arkansas pitchers to recognize.

Hunter Hollan and Hagen Smith have been named midseason All-Americans by Perfect Game. Hollan garnered third-team praise as a starter, while Smith earned second-team honors as a reliever. Hunter was also named to the midseason watch list for the Golden Spikes Award, which honors college baseball’s pitcher of the year.

  • In 36 innings this year, Hunter has a 4-1 record and has struck out 35 batters. He’ll get the nod to start today against the Rebels.

  • Hagen, meanwhile, has been lights out from the bullpen since moving there after the season began. He boasts a 2-0 record with a 3.97 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 11 1/3 relief innings.

🔺 Taking The Crown. A three-game series against the defending national champions is in store for No. 5 Arkansas baseball this weekend. The Diamond Hogs face Ole Miss tonight at 6pm in the ’Sip, seeking back-to-back series wins in Oxford for the first time since 2008-10.

Keep and eye on the long balls, because every next home run the Hogs belt is another notch in an impressive streak. Arkansas has hit one out of the park in 24 consecutive games. Jared Wegner leads the team with 12 on the year, and he could threaten Ryan Lundquist’s record of 24 from the 1997 campaign.
