Razorback Brew 4/19: Hunting the net

Today, the SEC Championships begin for two different Razorback teams.

Good morning. We were shocked and saddened to learn of Chris Smith’s sudden passing Monday evening. Chris, an eight-year NFL veteran and proud native of Rowan County, NC, played four years for Arkansas football from 2010-13 and was eventually a fifth-round draft pick in 2014. Chris was just 31 years old.

📈 STOCK UP

🔺 You Make Me Complete. It seemed like freshman Robyn Herron was gonna have a perfect game for a while yesterday at Bogle Park. Robyn was flawless through the first 12 batters she faced as No. 12 Arkansas defeated Texas A&M Commerce, 8-1, and improved to 32-12 on the year. Do-it-all redshirt senior Chenise Delce eventually closed things out in the final 1.1 innings to register her third save of the season.

Six of Arkansas’ eight runs were coincidentally scored in the sixth inning, beginning with Rylin Hedgecock’s 16th home run of the year. Big hits from Reagan Johnson and Cylie Halvorson blew the game open as the Hogs never looked back.

🔺 April Flowers. Joining in on yesterday’s run-fest was Hannah Camenzind, as the freshman sensation drove in a run and scored herself. It’s yet another solid outing for Hannah, who also took home her second SEC Freshman of the Week honor of the month. The Valley, NE product tossed her second complete game of the year last weekend against UAB to help sweep the Blazers. In addition, she more than held her own at the plate with her first career multi-hit outing, going 2-for-3 with a career high three RBI.

🔺 Hunting The Net. The SEC Men’s Tennis Tournament begins today with 13th-seeded Arkansas facing 12th-seeded Vanderbilt at noon. The Hogs come in at No. 74 in the latest ITA rankings with the doubles duo of Melvin Manuel and Adrien Burdet sitting as No. 78. Freshman Gerard Planelles Ripoll currently leads the team in singles wins, posting a 15-8 record through the dual season.

🔺 Preseason Preview. The first iteration of ESPN’s college football FPI top-30 rankings have dropped, and Arkansas comes in right at No. 30. The Hogs are joined by eight fellow Southeastern Conference teams following a 7-6 season the concluded with a second-straight bowl victory. Check out the full rankings here.

🔺 Not one, but TWO three-run innings. No. 5 Arkansas baseball came through in spurts to clinch another 30-win season last night with another midweek victory at home. The Diamond Hogs held off Central Arkansas 6-3 in what was their 25th home victory on the year.

Five Razorbacks finished the game with multiple hits, including Tavian Josenberger, who ended up with a team-high two RBI, and Caleb Cali, who crossed home plate twice. Christian Foutch pitched two innings in relief for his first-career win as well.
