Razorback Brew 3/25: First pitch crushing

Today, Ryder Helfrick needs just one pitch to leave his mark.

Good Morning. Spring is fully in the air as the regular season marches on for Arkansas baseball and softball, and postseason action for Razorback gymnastics and swimming.

Here’s what we have for in today’s Brew:

🎥 Face-to-Face with Eric Mateos
⚾️ Waste no time…or pitches
🐗 And so much more!

Livin’ the dream. Eric Mateos is the new man at the helm of the Razorbacks' offensive line. But, it's not his first time working under Sam Pittman at Arkansas.

Ten years ago, Mateos served under then-offensive line coach Sam Pittman as a grad assistant as he tried to break into division I football from the JUCO ranks. Since then it's been full speed ahead—coaching at programs like LSU, BYU & Baylor before coming full circle and landing the job as offensive line coach at Arkansas.

In the newest episode of the Hog Pod, Bo Mattingly dives into his journey, working under Bobby Petrino and what makes Sam Pittman the only man he would drop everything and move across the country for when he came calling.

🔺 First Pitching Crushing. The top-ranked Arkansas baseball team notched a 5-0 start in SEC play for the first time 15 years Friday with a 6-5 series-clinching win over Auburn.

Ryder Helfrick gave the Diamond Hogs the edge with a ninth-inning go-ahead home run in his first career SEC at-bat, on the very first pitch! It was the third separate deficit of the night Arkansas overcame playing without manager Dave Van Horn, who was home in Fayetteville for the birth of his triplet grandchildren.

Arkansas is now 19-3 on the season and is back home in Baum-Walker Stadium tomorrow evening to face Little Rock.

🔺 Two Arms, Two Hits Allowed. Win No. 24 for the 17th-ranked Arkansas softball squad came Saturday afternoon as pitchers Hannah Camenzind and Morgan Leinstock dazzled in the circle. The duo combined for a two-hit shutout to down No. 20 Mississippi State 3-0 at Bogle Park. Hannah and Morgan combined for the Hogs’ 10th shutout of the season, while Bri Ellis continued her impressive season at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a solo home run, her 11th homer of the season.

🔺 Paint It Razorback Red. For the second time this month, the 13th-ranked Arkansas men’s golf program will play in one of the toughest fields in collegiate golf when the Razorbacks travel to the Floridian National Golf Club to play in the Valspar Collegiate Invitational. on Mar 25-26. The 16-team tournament will feature 13 of the top 50 programs in college golf, including 10 of the top 25. 26 holes are scheduled for today, and 18 holes for Tuesday.

🔺 Liquid State. Razorback swimmers had a strong showing at last week’s NCAA Championships, and Alessia Ferraguti came away with two All-American Honorable Mentions. Alessia placed 16th in the 100 Breaststroke Friday to earn her first Honorable Mention, and finished 13th in the 200 Breaststroke B-Final Saturday for her second. Betsy Wizard also shattered her previous personal best in the 100 Fly by 0.32 seconds, finishing in 52.70, and Bella Cothern posted a time of 52.62, coming very close to her own personal best at 52.52.

🔺 Bars n’ Beams. The Arkansas Gymbacks had another historic outing on Saturday as the Hogs posted a score of 197.050 at SEC Championships, good for sixth place.

It’s the first time that the Gymbacks have ever scored 197+ in an SEC Championships, a new program record. The team also set new SECs highs on bars (49.250) and beam (49.450), and their beam score was a best by over two-tenths.

Arkansas had three top 10 finishes on the day, with Cami Weaver and Hailey Klein tying for eighth on beam with a score of 9.925, which also ties the individual program record on the event at SEC Championships. Maddie Jones posted a 9.900 on floor, which landed her in a 10-way tie for seventh.

Tuskers Tavern has a full-length bar with lots of seating and a quaint, library or living room type vibe to relax and wind down. There’s also a small patio for those days when the sun is calling your name. The bar is here to provide another option for those on the east side of town to gather in a comfortable, upscale atmosphere. Whether it’s for a drink after work or you want to meet friends for a bite to eat and connect – Tuskers is the perfect place.

Back and forth action. We’re recapping everything that happened on the diamond last week. Plus, we’re talking a little March Madness.
