Razorback Brew 2/8: Let's play two

Today, Arkansas softball begins anew.

Good Morning. Let’s play two, shall we? Arkansas softball starts another season this afternoon with not one, but two games down in Florida. Women’s basketball won’t be too far away, either. The Sunshine State better be ready for some Hog calls.

Now, what else is in store for today’s Brew?

🏈 MEET ANTON JUNCAJ

Anton Juncaj’s path has been anything but normal. Anton was a freshman starter at the DII level who found himself at a JUCO two years later when COVID hit. He finally got his time to shine at Albany over the past two seasons, and is making his DI leap with the Razorbacks.

This episode of “In Studio with Tera” features Tera Talmadge getting to know Albany transfer defensive lineman, Anton Juncaj. We'll learn about his skills on the field and why he decided to come to Arkansas.

📈 STOCK UP

🔺 Play Ball! The 12th-ranked Arkansas softball team opens its 2024 campaign against five teams this weekend at the Paradise Classic in Boca Raton, FL. The Hogs’ first game of the season is against Marshall at 1pm, and they’ll face FAU at 6pm.

Since 2017, the Hogs are a remarkable 27-4 on opening weekend under head coach Courtney Deifel. An undefeated start in South Florida would give the Razorbacks back-t0-back 5-0 starts for the first time since 2018-19.

🔺 Doing Her Part. Arkansas freshman golfer Maria José Marin received her third SEC Freshman Golfer of the Week accolade following just her fourth collegiate tournament after her performance at the Purdue Puerto Rico Classic. The No. 1 golfer in the Spikemark rankings finished 1-under this week as a part of Arkansas’ winning performance. Maria now has the most SEC Freshman of the Week awards in school history and ties Stacy Lewis with the most in a single season when she earned three weekly awards in 2007-08.

🔺 Skipper Speaks. Hype is building with the 2024 Arkansas baseball team. Manager Dave Van Horn discusses how his pitching staff leads the way, why he’s stuck around in Fayetteville for 22 years and counting, and reminisces about the time he got caught in a storm during his minor league playing days in this appearance on MLB Network

🔺 Service Under The Sun. A weekend road trip to the desert is in store for Razorback women’s tennis. Arkansas will play the first of two matches in Arizona against Grand Canyon this afternoon at 4pm, with its second against No. 24 Arizona State on Saturday. The Hogs have claimed the doubles point in each of their three victories this season in addition to No. 21 Morgan Cross/Indianna Spink picking up a ranked win in their match against Michigan. Kelly Keller and Lenka Stara currently lead the team with two singles victories each.

🔺 Familiar Travel. The Arkansas women’s basketball team went over .500 in SEC play on Sunday, and will look for league win No. 6 on the road against Florida today. This is the Hogs’ fourth trip to the Sunshine State this season.

Arkansas has won four its last six meetings against Florida, and a win tonight would be the program’s first in Gainesville since 2019.

Tipoff this afternoon is at 5pm CT on SEC Network Plus. Click here to read up on how head coach Mike Neighbors expects the team to emotionally reset after Sunday’s clutch win over Auburn.
