Razorback Brew 2/20: Lefty loosey

Today, we highlight a new southpaw for the Diamond Hogs.

Good Morning. Arkansas baseball lived up to its strong opening weekend history, while the Gymbacks placed a very high score away from Barnhill Arena. We’ll recap all the Presidents’ Day action for ya.

Now, what else is in store for today’s Brew?

🎥 Michael Qualls’ moment
⚾️ Lefty’s dominant debut
🐗 And so much more!

🎥 WALK ON AIR

This is the story, behind the untold story, of one of the most exciting plays in Razorback History.

Ten years after Michael Qualls beat the buzzer with a rim-rattling dunk to defeat Kentucky, “Walk on Air” – the latest short film from Hogs+ – re-lives this iconic moment and all that transpired afterward.

“Walk on Air” features original interviews with Qualls plus Mike Anderson, Jimmy Dykes, Kikko Haydar, Matt Zimmerman, and Rod Winkler.

📈 STOCK UP

🔺 Fishing At The Plate. The second-ranked Arkansas baseball team used freshman LHP Colin Fisher’s near-perfect collegiate debut to clinch their opening weekend series against James Madison. Colin threw five shutout innings, struck out four, and gave up just three hits in leading the Razorbacks to a 4-0 victory, which moves them to 3-1 on the season. Koty Frank, Will McEntire, and Stone Hewlett all came on in relief of Fisher to secure the shutout win. It has now been 10 years since Arkansas dropped a non-conference home weekend series.

Up next for the Diamond Hogs is a trip to Arlington, TX for the Kubota College Baseball Series at Globe Life Field. Arkansas will first take on No. 7 Oregon State Friday at 7pm.

🔺 Tracking Movement. For the fourth consecutive week, the Arkansas women’s track team remains No. 1 in the national ratings index while the men’s squad moves back up to the No. 3 ranking where they were two weeks ago following an impressive outing at the Arkansas Qualifier last weekend. The Razorbacks will host the SEC Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday inside the Randal Tyson Track Center.

🔺 Squad Goals. In the second of two meets in three days, the 16th-ranked Arkansas Gymbacks posted their second-best score of the season, 197.375, and finished second among No. 10 Alabama (197.625), No. 19 Arizona (196.950) and host TWU (195.725) at the TWU Quad Meet. Arkansas did not score lower than 49.200 in any of its rotations on the day and had a monster outing on floor with a 49.575, which matches the Hogs’ season best and the second-best score in program history. The team score of 197.375 is also the fifth-best ever, and the program’s top five scores have now come in the last four seasons under head coach Jordyn Wieber.

🔺 The Water’s Fine. The Arkansas swimming and diving team is at Auburn this week for the SEC Championships. The Razorback dive team participated in a team diving exhibition yesterday, featuring Malea Martinez, Bryze Sanchez, and Isa Perreira. Hog swimmers will take to the water this morning for the 200 medley relay and the 800 free relay beginning with prelims. Click here to stream the events.

🔺 And 1. Arkansas men’s basketball stays on the road for the second of back-to-back road games to face Texas A&M tonight at 6pm on ESPN. This is the second matchup between the Razorbacks and Aggies this season.

The Hogs won the first meeting, 78-77, thanks to a buzzer beater from Tramon Mark. Relive that wild moment from in this exclusive Razorback Access episode from Hogs+.
