Greatness runs in DJ Gasso’s blood. The new hitting coach for Arkansas softball grew up the son of seven-time Women's College World Series champion, Patty Gasso. He’s always been immersed in the sport of softball, and after building a reputation as one of the premier hitting coaches in the college ranks, he finds himself on Courtney Deifel's staff in his first season at Arkansas.

Bo Mattingly of Hogs+ sat down with the Razorbacks' new assistant to talk about his life growing up with a softball legend for a mom and how it helped shape him into the coach he is today.

🔺 Duking It Out. The third-ranked Arkansas baseball team opened the 2024 season with back-to-back wins over James Madison on Friday and Saturday.

With Will McEntire on the mound for nearly six innings, the Diamond Hogs came from behind to win 6-4 on Friday, which improves their record to 21-1 on Opening Day under skipper Dave Van Horn. On Saturday, Ty Wilmsmeyer had the game of his life with a career-high five RBI and a spectacular home run robbery to help Arkansas post a 15-5 run-rule victory over the Dukes.

The Razorbacks will close the four-game series out today at Noon on SEC Network Plus.

🔺 Sweeter By The Dozen. Arkansas women’s basketball now has 12 straight wins over Missouri. Five Hogs scored in double digits, including a career-high 18 points from Maryam Dauda in the Razorbacks’ 75-68 victory over the Tigers. 13 of Maryam’s 18 points came in the third quarter, and she was 8-of-12 from the field while adding five rebounds, four assists, two blocks and one steal in 36 minutes. Makayla Daniels posted 14 points off 4-of-5 shooting from the field, which puts her fifth in career points at Arkansas with 1,791.

🔺 Marvelous Medley. The Arkansas Qualifier featured the Razorbacks breaking the distance medley relay school record by two seconds with a time of 9:20.09m, which makes Arkansas the fifth fastest school with the eighth best performance. Former Razorback Shafiqua Maloney also added another national title to her résumé with a 4:33.68 performance in her debut in running the mile at the event. Moving from fourth to first over the last lap of the race, Maloney won by less than a second, and fellow Razorback Mia Cochran finished third in a career best of 4:34.70 and led a crew of PRs by Arkansas runners.

🔺 Lunar Links. Three-time SEC Freshman Golfer of the week Maria José Marin is leading the Arkansas women’s golf team at the Moon Golf Invitational. Maria’s 2-under 70 from Saturday’s opening round was her 10th 18-hole score at par/under in 12 rounds this season, and has her in a tie for sixth out of 90 golfers. Arkansas as a team is also in sixth place entering second round action this morning.

🔺 Down With It. Arkansas softball’s second straight five-game weekend series resulted in another four wins for the Razorbacks at the Bear Down Fiesta. A 7-0 victory over Long Beach State was followed by two wins over Omaha and handing host Arizona its first loss of the young season.

The Hogs’ second win over Omaha on Sunday morning featured RHP Morgan Leinstock tossing a one-hitter in her fourth win of the year in as many decisions.

The 8-2 Razorbacks will finally return to Bogle Park for their home opener this Thursday against Illinois State.
