Razorback Brew 1/31: Crossing state lines

Today, a mini road-trip begins for Arkansas men's hoops.

Good Morning. Actually, it’s a great morning. Why wouldn’t it be? You’ve made it through what feels like the longest month of the year, and the Razorbacks are on TV tonight. We can think of no better Wednesday.

🎙️ MEET FERNANDO CARMONA

Fernando Carmona won’t back down from hard work. Being raised by his Cuban grandmother, the former San Jose State offensive lineman learned from a young age what it means to dig in and, in his own words, “stand on business.” Fernando’s upbringing of earning everything is evident when he gives it his all on every snap.

This episode of “In Studio with Tera” features Tera Talmadge getting to know Arkansas' new offensive lineman, Fernando Carmona. We'll learn about his time at SJSU, and why he chose to become a Razorback.

📈 STOCK UP

🔺 Road Warriors. Seven road contests over the next 12 games are in store for the Arkansas men’s basketball team, with the first happening tonight against Missouri. The Razorbacks have beaten the Tigers six of their last eight meetings on the hardwood, and Tramon Mark’s scoring ability can notch them another one in the series. Tramon is fifth among SEC players in points per game (17.4) and is averaging 18.3 since league play began this month.

Tip-off is set for 7:30pm and the game will be televised on SEC Network.

🔺 One of Everything. SEC honors were awarded to a handful of Razorbacks this week with high jumper Romaine Beckford named Field Athlete of the Week, pole vaulter John Kendricks earned Freshman of the Week, and sprinter Amber Anning taking home Co-SEC Runner of the Week. All three accomplished at least one career-best mark in their respective events over the weekend during the Razorback Invitational. Amber herself set the new British record in the 200m with a time of 22.60.

🔺 Sweet Spot. Arkansas softball earned yet another top-20 preseason ranking this week, checking in at No. 16 in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches’ Poll. It’s the fourth major college softball poll that has the Razorbacks among the top 20 teams. Earlier this month, Arkansas received the No. 12 preseason ranking from ESPN.com/USA Softball, No. 8 from Softball America, and No. 18 from D1Softball.

🔺 Passing It Down. Arkansas is celebrating National Girls and Women’s in Sports Day this Sunday, February 4, with a free clinic prior to the women’s basketball game against Auburn. The clinic is free for all girls 5-12 years old, limited to the first 150 registrants, and will run from 3-4 p.m. in the Basketball Performance Center located across the street from Bud Walton Arena. Click here to learn more info.

🔺 Superb Southpaw. Arkansas starting pitcher Hagen Smith has been named a preseason first-team All-American by D1Baseball. The left-hander is the first Razorback pitcher to be named a preseason first-team All-American by D1Baseball since Zach Jackson earned the recognition from the publication as a relief pitcher in 2016.

Hagen, a consensus All-American in 2023, enters the 2024 campaign as a preseason first-team All-American by both D1Baseball and Perfect Game. Both outlets have also tabbed the Razorbacks’ ace as the SEC Preseason Pitcher of the Year.
