Razorback Brew 12/5: Leading the line
Today, we meet Arkansas' new o-line coach.
Good morning. A little two-game win streak never hurt nobody. The Razorbacks notched another victory at Bud Walton Arena Monday evening, and their star player received worthy recognition. Plus, we’ll meet the Hogs football team’s newest assistant coach.
Now, what has all been mixed into today’s Brew?
🎥 How we built this
🏀 Hogs stifle Paladins
🐗 And so much more!
🏐 FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
A powerhouse built on trust. When the Volley Hogs practice, head coach Jason Watson’s work shines the brightest. When the match begins, he leaves it all to his players. The trust he has in each and every one of them is why Arkansas has grown into a national contender set to compete in the Sweet 16.
In this episode of the Hog Pod, we take an in-depth and behind-the-scenes look at how Coach Watson has taken the Arkansas volleyball program from afterthought to NCAA contender in just a few years. Hear from Watson as well as Jill Gillen, Maggie Cartwright, and Hannah Hogue.
📈 STOCK UP
🔺 Leading The Line. Eight years after serving as a graduate assistant for Sam Pittman, Eric Mateos has been selected by Coach Pittman to be Arkansas’ next offensive line coach. Mateos has been coaching since 2011 with his most recent gig as the o-line coach for Baylor, where he was named to Dave Campbell Texas Football’s 40 under 40 list. He’s also cut his teeth at BYU, LSU, and Texas State.
A former two-year starting center in college himself, Mateos has coached 13 NFL players including eight draft picks. BYU’s Brady Christensen is the most recent after being selected in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers.
🔺 From Distance And Close By. Career highs in three-pointers made and defensive rebounds collected helped Trevon Brazile elevate Arkansas men’s basketball over seventh-ranked Duke last week, and earn him SEC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors as well. Trevon’s double-double of 19 points and aforementioned 11 boards was his third double-double in four games, and the fifth of his career.
🔺 Last One, Best One. Every time Jill Gillen gets a kill or a block for Arkansas volleyball, she’s reminded of those who told her she couldn’t compete at her height. But head coach Jason Watson gave her a chance to fulfill her potential and her dream, and according to him, she gave him a chance too. Listen as Jill describes her special relationship with Coach Watson after leading the Volley Hogs to the Sweet 16 in her this interview with NCAA Digital’s Michella Chester.
🔺 Two Months To Go. 30 games in Bogle Park are set for the Arkansas softball team in the upcoming 2024 schedule. The 54-game slate also features 29 games against teams who competed in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, and it all starts on February 8 in the Paradise Classic down in South Florida. Check out the loaded 2024 slate for Arkansas here.
🔺 Endgame Battle. Thanks to a remarkable field goal percentage of 60.7%, Arkansas men’s basketball dropped 97 points on Furman to pick up win No. 6 on the season.
Khalif Battle crossed the 1,000-point mark for his career with a season-high 25 points, and Chandler Lawson wasn’t too far behind him with 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting. The efficient offensive showing helped the Razorbacks go on a 15-1 run to lead by 20 with 9:16 left in the game, and eventually cap off a 97-83 victory in front of the home crowd.
Arkansas hits the road to play the third and final Crimson and Cardinal Classic, facing the No. 19 Oklahoma Sooners in Tulsa’s BOK Center. Tipoff is set for 3pm with ESPN2 televising the game.
