🔺 106 Big Ones. Arkansas men’s basketball crossed the century mark for the first time in nearly three years in a 106-90 victory over UNC Wilmington Saturday afternoon. The Razorbacks shot 52.4% from the field, the seventh time Eric Musselman’s squad eclipsed 50% in a game this season.
Keyon Menifield Jr. put up a career-high 32 points on 8-of-14 shooting that included three 3-pointers and 13 made free throws out of 17 attempts. He added five assists and was +17 – one of two Hogs with as double-digit plus/minus.
Keyon’s terrific performance caught the attention of the league as he was named SEC Player of the Week. The sophomore from Flint, MI drew nine fouls while committing zero and scored 17 of his 32 in the first half as Arkansas took a seven-point lead at the break. He was the only Razorback to play all 20 minutes of the second half where he scored 15 points thank to making 8-of-9 at the line. Arkansas opens SEC play versus No. 25 Auburn this Saturday, Jan. 6. Tipoff is set for 1pm and the game will be televised on ESPN2.
🔺 Coming soon to a fairway near you… Arkansas women’s golf got an early Christmas present when head coach Shauna Taylor announced the signing of Natalie Blonien, who’s set to join the Hogs next season. Natalie is coming off her first American Junior Golf Association win after becoming the Amundi Evian Showcase Champion with a 141 (70-71). She got the win in Las Vegas by making a birdie on the second playoff hole to secure the win. Another top finish for Blonien was at the AJGA Joplin Junior Championship presented by Roper Honda, where she tied for fifth (79-75-71=225). 🔺 End Of Year Fun. The Arkansas women’s basketball team used a strong second half to defeat Incarnate Word, 67-48, on New Year’s Eve. Arkansas outscored UIW 40-28 in the second half, including a 21-point fourth quarter. Taliah Scott led the game with 24 points, while Maryam Dauda scored 11 of her 13 points in the third quarter. Saylor Poffenbarger pulled down 19 rebounds in the win to elevate the Hogs’ record to 12-3 and extend Arkansas’ winning streak to four games going into SEC play.
As the Hogs enter conference play later this week, Taliah will go for history to become the first Razorback to earn six SEC Freshman of the Week honors. She captured her fifth in the last six weeks the day after Christmas.
Arkansas’ first SEC contest is this Thursday, Jan. 4 at Kentucky. The Hogs and Wildcats will tipoff at 6pm from Rupp Arena on SEC Network Plus.
