Razorback Brew 11/29: Rivals meet again

Today, the Hogs and Blue Devils face off in Bud Walton Arena.

Good morning. Arkansas has a new Edge, and it’s in the name, too. Arkansas Edge is now the official NIL collective for the University Of Arkansas, and all 465-plus Razorback student-athletes. Learn how you can contribute here.

Now, what has all been mixed into today’s Brew?

📝 One fateful night in North Carolina
🏀 Hogs and Devils meet again
🐗 And so much more!

🏀 ANOTHER DANCE

Get ready for tonight’s game with a new Hogs+ feature film. “Dancing with the Devils” is a look through the history of the Duke-Arkansas matchup—from its origin, to the 1994 National Championship, to the modern day matchups. See exclusive interviews with Nolan Richardson, Corey Beck, Scotty Thurman, Mike Nail, Wayne Stehlik, Matt Zimmerman, Eric Musselman and more.

🏆 APRIL 4, 1994

Do you remember where you were when Scotty Thurman hit the most famous basket in Arkansas basketball history? It’s almost a cinch that at some point Wednesday it will be talked about around Razorback Nation as Arkansas plays host to Duke in what is a rare non-conference road game for the Blue Devils.

It’s part of the SEC-ACC challenge, the reason the Blue Devils are hitting the road. It’s unlikely they would ever set foot in Bud Walton Arena under any other circumstance.

And it's fitting. The Hogs—and I bet coach Nolan Richardson wouldn’t have it any other way—had to win their only national championship in Duke’s backyard in 1994. Charlotte Coliseum is little more than two hours away from Cameron Indoor in Durham, N.C.

📈 STOCK UP

🔺 Rivals Meet Again. This game needs no introduction. It’s Arkansas vs. Duke in the Basketball Palace of Mid-America. What more needs to be said?

The Razorbacks are back in Bud Walton Arena tonight host the seventh-ranked Blue Devils in the inaugural ACC-SEC Challenge. This is the first time a matchup in the all-time series, which is tied at 2-2, will not be played on a neutral court. We’ve seen these two programs battle it out in the NIT, Elite 8, Final Four, and for a National Championship in which Arkansas cut down the nets.

Game five of this rare, yet powerful rivalry tips off at 8:15pm and will be televised on ESPN.

🔺 Track Capital. The 2023-24 schedule for Arkansas track and field features a total of nine home meets–five indoor and four outdoor–with the Razorbacks serving as host of the SEC Indoor Championships in February as well as the NCAA West Preliminary Round in May. Up first will be the men’s distance runners, who just finished fourth at the NCAA Championships, as they’ll compete in the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season-Opener this weekend at Boston University. Check out the full slate of upcoming events here.

🔺 Kick For A Cause. Arkansas placekicker Cam Little has made 53 field goals now three years into his Razorback career, and each one of them have made an impact off the field as well. Cam has donated $1,460 in made field goals toward the Down Syndrome Connection of Northwest Arkansas. Here’s to plenty more in 2024, Cam!

🔺 Taylor Head loves to compete more than just about anything. The senior outside hitter for the NCAA Tournament-bound Razorback volleyball team comes from a family of college athletes, which brought her a love of competition from an early age. And it’s something on display every time she takes the court. She’s been a big part of the rebirth of the Arkansas volleyball program, and is quick to credit coach Jason Watson, who believed in her when others didn’t. Learn about her journey in the latest episode of the Hog Pod with Bo Mattingly.

🔺 Trend-Building. For the second time in three weeks, Taliah Scott was recognized as the SEC Co-Freshman of the Week. In the Hogs’ two games down in Florida for the Fort Myers Tip-Off, Taliah averaged 19.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. She earned the honor with Essence Cody from Alabama this week.

Through three weeks into the season, Taliah leads the SEC in scoring with 23.1 points per game, which is ninth in the NCAA. Her point total of 162 is the third highest in the country, and she leads the conference in free throw makes (42) and free throw attempts (48).

Taliah and the Razorbacks are back on the court tomorrow vs. No. 15 Florida State in the SEC/ACC Challenge.
