Razorback Brew 3/29: Numbers Ain't Lyin'

Today, we're highlighting the stars from the Razorback women's basketball season.

Good morning! It may be National Smoke & Mirrors Day (look it up, it is indeed real) but we aren't pulling a fast one here: Arkansas baseball continues to roll at Baum-Walker. We've got the stats and facts that will get you ready to tackle your Wednesday. But first…

Spring Football Is Here: The Hogs are gearing up for another season on The Hill, and we're excited to announce the premiere of the Hogs+ Live: Spring Football Show with Tera Talmadge on Hogs+ tonight at 8:00pm CT! The best part? Hogs+ members can sign up to receive football updates from Tera via text and submit football questions for tonight's show.

Now, what's all been mixed in today's Brew?

🎥 BEHIND THE SCENES

Anniversaries galore. The 1997-1998 season for Arkansas women’s basketball was quite the ride, and it took a wild turn once March hit.

Hogs+ is releasing a new documentary premiering THIS THURSDAY AT 8PM CT that will tell the complete story of the Razorbacks’ improbable journey to the Final Four as a 9-seed – still the lowest seed to ever reach the final weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Hear exclusive interviews from head coach Gary Blair, and players Christy Smith and Wendi Willits as we celebrate 25 years since their Final Four run.

Speaking of celebrations, catch up on our 100 Seasons of Arkansas Basketball documentary to hold you over until tomorrow.

THAT’S THE TEA

Golden friendship. Arkansas gymnastics head coach Jordyn Wieber hired Kyla Ross as her assistant a decade after they competed with each other in the 2012 Summer Olympics. It's easy to see why the two work together so well as coaches like they used to do as athletes.

In the latest episode of That's the Tea, Tera Talmadge and Taliyah Brooks chat with Wieber and Ross to the show to talk about their friendship, what it was like to be Olympic teammates, and find out how well they know each other.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Runs Rule. Another colossal victory for No. 6 Arkansas baseball at Baum-Walker Stadium went down last night. (Surprise, surprise!) The Razorbacks scored in each of the first four innings, including a seven-run third inning, and run-ruled Omaha to the tune of a 16-3 final score.

Tavian Josenberger, Kendall Diggs, and Jace Bohrofen all produced at least two hits and were responsible for eight of the Razorbacks' 16 runs.

It was the 15th straight home win for the Diamond Hogs, making their current streak the longest Arkansas has had under Dave Van Horn. The team is one win away of matching the program's longest home winning streak since 1997.

🔼 Building A Winner. After 20 years of running Arkansas baseball, Dave Van Horn has built a powerhouse program. It's a 365-day-a-year gig, but DVH can work in confidence knowing his staff is built to go to Omaha.

🔼 Both Phases On Lock. Incoming Razorback hooper Baye Fall got to show off his talents in the 2023 McDonald’s All-American game as he was active on the defensive in his 12 minutes of action, and came away with two points and four rebounds while playing with the best young players around the country.

The highly talented Razorback commit will also be on the floor next week for the Nike Hoop Summit.

🔼 Prestige Worldwide. Arkansas women’s golf signee Maria José Marin is ready to play at The Augusta National Women’s Amateur begins today, and Arkansas women's golf signee is ready to leave her mark as one of 72 amateurs in the world to compete in the tournament. The Colombia native is ranked No. 41 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.

🔼 Numbers Ain’t Lyin. Now that one of the best seasons in Arkansas women’s basketball has wrapped, it's time to highlight the girls who consistently lit up the court and the stat sheet.

  • Erynn Barnum was a certified BUCKET GETTER, shooting an incredible 55.6% from the field and averaged a clean 15 points per game, both led the Hogs. Erynn was also second on the team in rebounds per game (6.5).

  • Fellow senior Makayla Daniels was always reliable from downtown. She led the Razorbacks in three-point percentage (33.8%) and was equally lethal on defense with a team-high 1.64 steals per game average.

  • And nobody played more than Samara Spencer, who averaged 33.9 minutes per game in all 37 games this year. She was also second on the team in points per game (14.4).

 🎧 RAZORBACK DAILY

Dust off those pads. Spring (football) is in the air. What questions are we hoping to find answers to as practice is back underway after spring break? Q and Z also give a shout out to a couple of future Hogs who competed in the McDonald’s All-American Games yesterday.
