Razorback Brew 5/29: Driving it home

Today, we hope you're having a happy, restful Memorial Day.

Good morning. And Happy Memorial Day. To all the families, friends, and soldiers who have dealt with loss, we support you and thank you for being strong. On a day that's usually spent with joy, we do not forget the sacrifices that have made it possible.

Today’s Brew will be short because we know you’re (hopefully) busy today being not busy. Think of it as a single shot of the Brew.

Now, what have into today’s Brew?

🎥 Face To Face: Jace Bohrofen
⚾️ The SEC Tournament that was
🐗 And so much more!

🎙️ JACE BOHROFEN

Captain Hog. Sometimes, things are just out of your control. Jace Bohrofen knows that all too well. He had his senior season of high school baseball canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

His first school wasn’t a fit, so he transferred to Arkansas. And then, in his first year with the Razorbacks last season, he suffered a freak injury that cut into his playing time.

Jace Bohrofen has certainly made the most of his junior season in Fayetteville, leading the team in home runs and becoming a fixture in the Razorback lineup. His teammates have noticed, too—he was voted a team captain this season, despite having just parts of one season under his belt on the Hill. It speaks volumes about who he is.

If Jace Bohrofen has set the tone, the rest of the team has followed suit, going to work with an eye on the ultimate prize.

📈 STOCK UP

🔺 The SEC Tournament That Was. Arkansas baseball rallied back within one in the ninth inning, but couldn’t pull off the comeback as they came up short in a 5-4 loss to Texas A&M in the semifinals of this past weekend’s SEC Tournament. The Hogs finished their weekend in Hoover with a 2-1 record, including a win against No. 5 LSU, and advanced to the semifinals for the fourth time in the last six seasons.

The Razorbacks racked up 10 hits, including a pair of extra-base hits from Caleb Cali and John Bolton, but the Aggie pitching staff combined for 14 strikeouts and stranded nine base runners.

Arkansas collected its first run of the day in the seventh inning—Ben McLaughlin’s pinch hit RBI single to left center cut the Razorbacks’ deficit to three runs. The Aggies would then extend their lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out single, pushing the Hogs back into a four-run deficit entering the ninth. Arkansas, however, would not go down without a fight.

Caleb Cali poked a leadoff single through the left side before Peyton Holt was plunked by a pitch, putting a pair of runners on with no outs in the inning. After Texas A&M recorded the first out, John Bolton delivered a two-run double down the line in right to bring Arkansas within two.

Tavian Josenberger then singled through the left side. Kendall Diggs, the very next batter, reached on a fielding error to score which scored John Bolton from third as the Hogs cut their deficit to just one. But the score would stay there until the end of the game.

🔺 Driving It Home. Baum-Walker Stadium has been selected as one of 16 NCAA regional sites. Arkansas will host regionals for the 10th time in program history. The regional field will feature four teams, playing in a double-elimination format. All 16 regionals are scheduled to be conducted from Friday, June 2 to Monday, June 5 (if necessary).

The full tournament selections and pairings will be announced on the NCAA Baseball selection show this morning on ESPN2 at 11:00am CT.

🔺 Finish Strong. Arkansas men’s golf started tied for 20th, worked its way into the coveted 15th spot with a handful of holes to play, and ultimately finished 18th (870 / +30) at the 2023 NCAA Championships, played at Grayhawk Golf Club’s Raptor Course.

Arkansas recorded its 22nd top-20 finish at the NCAA Championship—ninth under head coach Brad McMakin—and its third straight. In fact, Arkansas was one of just 13 teams that reached the national finals at Grayhawk in each of the last three years.

🔺 Under Pressure. Arkansas volunteer assistant Shamier Little claimed a victory in the 400m hurdles at the Rabat Diamond League as she posted a time of 53.95 seconds in her first hurdle race of the 2023 season. It’s marks the fifth Diamond League title in her career.

🔺 Under Pressure. Razorback Britton Wilson, who adorns the cover of Track & Field News magazine this month, repeated her 400m and 400m hurdles double from the SEC Championships, but did so in a shorter time frame between races to conclude the NCAA West preliminary rounds this weekend with a pair of meet records.

Starting with the 400m, she cruised to a stellar time of 49.51 in the quarterfinals. The effort bettered the NCAA West meet record of 49.68 set by Athing Mu of Texas A&M in 2021. And following her 400m effort, she had just 35 minutes until she raced again over 400m hurdles, where she had set the NCAA West meet record in the first round with a 54.08.

Delivering another fast performance, Britton Wilson bettered the field by two full seconds with a 53.71 that improved her NCAA West meet record. The second-best time of 55.79 belonged to Houston’s Sydni Townsend.

Another heat winner for Arkansas in the 400m hurdles was Madison Langley-Walker, who claimed the final heat in 56.06, moving to No. 3 on the UA all-time list. Her previous best was 56.60 from this season.

Ackera Nugent improved her NCAA West meet record in the 100m hurdles again. This time she ran 12.69 (0.8 wind) to lead the field and better the 12.72 she clocked in the first round. Racing in the third heat with her was teammate Madison Langley-Walker, who set a career best of 13.11 to finish fifth in the race and 11th overall.
